Roads

We have extensive experience at performing imagery surveys of road networks. Surveys can be performed quickly and efficiently at normal traffic speeds, minimising time spent in the field and thus cost of the survey. If road pavement condition data is required, this can be collected in the office from post-rating of the video images, at a substantial reduction in overall survey cost.

The following image shows a panoramic view of a rural roadway taken during a large network survey. This image has been 'stitched' together from three independent camera views and was collected at normal traffic speeds.

This type of view can be very useful to the road owning authority wishing to visually examine any aspect within the road reserve. A list of possible uses for the imagery include:

  • asset inventory
  • safety surveys
  • sight distances
  • GIS auditing
  • condition surveys (trees, footpaths, kerbs, crossings, lines, signs, pavement items)
  • maintenance contract audits
  • route sign verification
  • bus route determination
  • vegetation control
  • public complaint investigation
  • project planning

The following image shows a similar panoramic view in an urban setting. This has also been 'stitched' together from three independent camera views collected at normal traffic speeds. Uses in the urban context are similar, however the greater density of objects of interest would dictate that a closer sampling of the images was appropriate.

With the on screen measuring tool, we can imagine using this sort of imagery to check:

  • line marking layout of pedestrian crossings
  • widths of lanes and parking bays
  • position of roadside furniture in relation to the roadway
  • streetscape aspects in relation to the planning scheme
